“Are you going to tell them about the colic?”
Vivian was startled out of her thoughts by the question as she stood with Riki in line for the first vet inspection, the trot-up, at Hardy Stud. She looked back to see Stephen and Miele, from D'Altavilla Equestrian Centre come up in place behind them.
“I believe that I’m obligated to,” Vivian replied. “If they ask.”
“I doubt they’d even be able to tell,” the other rider added.
“If they saw him undersaddle they would,” Vi grumbled, rubbing Riki’s alert neck as he peered at the activity around him.
“Ya know, you can’t use that as an excuse when Miele kicks his butt in Dressage this week,” Stephen teased with a chuckle.
“Oh, yes, I can!” the rider from Grand Finale challenged with a laugh, turning around to face Stephen who rolled his eyes. Vi looked back down the line at the other horses that had lined up for their vet inspections. They were so many successful, incredible horses all gathered for the same event. She turned back to Riki and patted his shoulder. Coming into the competition, she had had a lot of confidence in their performance, but now, with Riki’s last of luster, she was beginning to doubt herself.

The line moved quickly as horses walked up to the strip, stood square, and then trotted down, turned around, trotted back up, and stood square once more. The first phase was the easy one, and Vivian was confident that Riki wasn’t lame or uneven in his striding. When their turn came, Riki walked Riki forward. It took a little bit of urging as Riki attempted to hang back with Miele, but eventually Vi convinced him that it wouldn’t be too bad to be independent for a few moments. They approached the vets and judges and stood square, Riki’s head extended evenly and his eyes watching them critically. Vivian felt her chest tighten as two of the vets spoke quietly to each other and scrawled on their papers. When signaled to, Vivian trotted Riki down the strip. His strides were even but lazy. She turned him to the right at the end of the strip and faced the vets at the other end. Riki’s chocolaty eyes must have found Miele again, for his neck arched and he whinnied deeply as Vivian asked him to trot again. With his normal, massive amount of propulsion, Riki laughed himself down the strip, almost dragging Vivian, as he pranced back to his ladyfriend.
“Woah, Riki. Woah,” Vivian cooed, pulling back on Riki’s reins. The stallion rolled his head around and refused to engage his breaks. Vivian glanced ahead as they began to run out of tarmack and pulled back harder. The vets stepped aside warily as Riki jerked his head, trying to loose himself from Vivian and threw a massive buck.
“Quit it, Riki!” Vivian snapped, spinning the stallion towards herself. Riki snorted angrily and pranced down to a walk. Brigning him back to a square halt, Vivian apologized to the vets for Riki’s behavior. They only pursed their thin lips and nodded shortly at her.
“Is this the horse that coliced?” one of them asked Vi. She swallowed hard and felt her chest tighten nervously. All this way for them to disqualify her for competition due to Riki being unfit for performance? She managed a nod in response to the judges. They pursed their lips again and one of them motioned down the strip once more.
“Again,” he said flatly.

Vivian jogged the stallion down the stripe once more and this time Riki’s head was high and his tail flagging behind him as his feet arched gracefully from the ground in an energy filled prance. He spun around at the end of the strip, eager to trot back, and Vivian held him back for a second, telling him to go easy, and then allowed him to extend into his trot. The stallion’s white hooves pumped the ground as he powered back to this lady friend. His feet danced in and out of a canter as he tried to get back Vivian. Learning from her previous mistake, Vi began to bring Riki down to his walk much earlier than last time. Riki listened with frustration and impatience and walked tensely next to her before squaring up for the last time in front of the judges.

The stallion snorted and pawed the turf under his hooves as the vets approached Vi with their clipboards tucked under their arms.
“As you know, we are obligated to make every judgment here for the safety of the horses and their riders,” the taller vet said, peering at Riki’s eyes which were fiery and challenging. “Your horse shows excellent gaits, but his recent illness does concern us.”
“Concerns us very much indeed,” the other vet chimed in with lips pressed together in a thin line.
“I’m obligated to deny your horse approval for this inspection due to the colic and the fact that he was on IV fluids for over 12 hours,” the first vet said, crossing his arms over his chest.
“That is,” the second, smaller vet interjected. “Unless you can enlighten us on this matter in a way that shows this stallions competence for performance.”
“I’ve been working him, multiple times a day,” Vivian replied, trying to make a case for Riki. “He is getting electrolytes in his feed which is already completely soaked. His hay is watered down now, and I’m even giving him a small mix of Bran Mash and Epson Salts after each workout. His lack of hydration was the cause of the colic, and I’m working very hard to prevent that from ever happening again. He is working well undersaddle. I think that he is already far beyond that colic.” The vets exchanged glances and then one of them lifted Riki’s top lip to poke at his gums. The other pinched at Riki’s neck and watched the little flap of skin quickly disappear to stretch across the stallions arched neck. Vivian didn’t realize she was holding her breath until one of the vets gave her a firm nod and motioned that she could move on.
“He passed. But only because we trust that you are going to very closely monitor his hydration and keep him from colicing or experiencing any deficiency throughout his participating in this competition,” the tall vet said. Vivian nodded firmly, breathing a heavy sigh of relief. As she half walked and half was dragged off of the turf and back towards the sandy line-up, a large grin spread across her face. As she passed Stephen and Miele, she gave him a big thumbs up. They had made it.
