Vivian spotted the man from D'Altavilla Equestrian Centre down at the other end of the stable and called out to him.
“Stephen, have you got a whip?” she yelled as she jogged towards him. He looked up at her and noted the paleness and panic of her eyes. Sensing her urgency he nodded shortly and grabbed a long, Dressage whip from one his trunks and held it out to her.
“Thank you,” Vivian breathed. “Could you help me?” Stephen nodded and followed behind her as she ran back to Riki’s stall.
“Colic?” Stephen asked, looking down at Riki. Vivian nodded silently and motioned to Riki’s head.
“You pull, I’ll push,” she instructed, moving behind Riki’s hip. Stephen grabbed the lead rope and wiggled it to get Riki’s attention before tugging gently on it.
“Come on, boy,” he said. “Get up.” Vivian shoved her knee into Riki’s back and rocked his shoulder.
“Up, Riki! Up!” she grunted, grabbing the whip and cracking it behind him. The stallion’s head jerked in Stephen’s hands, but he didn’t make a move to get up. Vivian brought the whip down onto Riki’s butt with a loud smack and yelled at him, “GET UP!” Painfully slowly, but with a loud series of grunts, Riki lurched forward and heaved himself up to his feet. Vivian moved back around to his head and took the lead from Stephen who was digging his phone out of his pocket.
“Vet?” he asked, looking to Vivian for her consent. She nodded quickly and led Riki out into the barn aisle to examine him better. Riki hung his head as Vivian rubbed her hands along his stomach and sides. He lifted a back leg and kicked half-heartedly at his gut.
“Did he eat recently?” Stephen asked Vivian, his palm covering the mouthpiece on his phone. Vivian glanced through the barns of the stall into the food bucket mounted in the corner. All of Riki’s soaked food sat untouched along with his hay. She shook her head to Stephen who relayed the message to the vet. After a moment of short, conformation he hung up and approached Riki.
“Vet says he will be here in 30 minutes,” he sighed, looing at Vivian uncertainly. “Is there anything else I can do to help?” Vivian shook her head slowly.
“I don’t think so,” she replied. “But thank you for all your help already.” She handed him back his whip. “I’m gonna try to get him walking,” she added as Riki kicked his stomach and grunted uncomfortably.
“Do you want to give him any benamine?” the rider from D'Altavilla Equestrian Centre asked as he watched Vivian begin to lead the distressed horse down the barn aisle. Vivian thought a moment before replying.
“No, I don’t want to mask it. I want the vet to see this,” she motioned back at Riki as he kicked at his stomach again between steps. Stephen nodded with understanding and patted Riki’s hip.
“Best of luck to him,” he said before returning to Miele’s stall.
Vivian offered Riki water multiple times while walking him up and down the barn aisle, but the stallion showed no interest in drinking. Vi rubbed salt on his gums, and he licked it off, but still showed no interest in drinking. He kicked at his stomach and attempted to lay down several times, but Vivian had had luck in keeping him from actually going down. The thirty minutes of waiting dragged out for what seemed like an hour with Vivian growing more and more concerned for the stallion.
When Riki’s hind legs gave out from underneath him, and he fell, sitting awkwardly, on the ground, Vivian reacted quickly and dragged his face while yelling at him and urging him up onto his feet. It took much longer than she would have liked, but eventually the stallion was back on all four hooves. The vet entered the barn just as Vivian got Riki walking again. Just seeing the vet relaxed Vivian.
The inspection proceeded quickly, with the vet sensing Vivian’s anxiety and Riki’s discomfort.
“When was the last time he passed?” the vet asked as she used her stethoscope to listen to the stallion’s gut sounds.
“I have no idea,” Vivian replied honestly. “He was just driven here from the airport this afternoon. He flew from the USA to here yesterday, landed early this morning, and was driven here. Arrived around noon. I didn’t notice any manure in the trailer with him, and he hasn’t gone since then.
“Has he eaten recently?” the vet inquired, glancing at her watch as she listened to his gut.
“No,” Vivian answered. “Didn’t eat his supper or touch his hay.”
“Has he been drinking regularly?”
“The person who monitored him on the flight said he wasn’t drinking, so he gave him some electrolytes. I don’t know about the transport company that drove him here to Hardy Stud, and he hasn’t had any interest in water since he has been here,” Vi replied, fidgeting with Riki’s lead rope as the vet straightened up and sighed.
“He is definitely colicing,” she said.
“Our best plan of action?” Vivian asked, wringing the lead rope in her hands.
“I’d like to start with a palpation, and go from there. And we’re most likely gonna have to tube him,” the vet answered, wrapping her stethoscope around her neck.
“You’re looking at around 300€.”
“Price doesn’t matter, just… do what needs to be done,” Vivian said shakily. The vet nodded understandingly and headed back out into the rain to get supplies for the procedures.
Vivian wrapped her arms around Riki’s head and hugged him against her chest. The stallion didn’t protest the affection and stood quietly while Vivian held him tightly.
“We’re gonna get through this right, Riki?” she whispered in his ear.
