The vet’s face contorted into a frown as she palpated Riki. The stallion’s head hung low as Vivian twitched his lip, but the twitch wasn’t enough to keep him from halfheartedly kicking at his stomach. The vet straightened up and removed the long, glove from her arm, wadding it up into a ball.
“He’s impacted,” she concluded, rubbing Riki’s neck. “The impaction isn’t a horrible one. It is in his large colon. I don’t think surgery is necessary right now although if he doesn’t pass it, it may be your only option. He is definitely gonna need some help to attempt to pass it though. I’m going to go ahead and tube him. In the meantime, I want you to consider IVs for tonight.”
The vet began preparing her equipment to tube Riki to give him some water with Epson salts and then mineral oil. Riki was fairly nonresponsive, his demeanor seeming completely suppressed by his discomfort. Vivian rubbed his neck, half to comfort him and half to comfort herself.
Riki lifted his head in annoyance and slight alarm as the vet began to feed the long, clear tube down his right nostril and esophagus. Vivian rubbed the underside of Riki’s neck to encourage him to swallow, which he did, sliding the tube more easily down his throat.
“Easy boy,” Vivian encouraged the stallion. “I know it feels weird, but it’s gonna help you.” The vet blew lightly into one end of the tube, trying to force the flap at the top of the stomach and the bottom of the esophagus to open and allow the tube to pass into the stomach. Riki pinned his ears back and lifted his top lip in a flehmen response. Vivian held on to his halter and spoke softly to the stallion as the vet grabbed a funnel and a bottle of Epson salts dissolved in water. She fit the funnel into the mouth of the tube and poured the mixture down into the tube. She lifted the funnel up above Riki’s high in order to get the fluid to run down into his stomach. After pouring 6 liters of water and Epson salts into Riki’s stomach, the vet looped the tube through his halter while she prepared the mineral oil.
“Hopefuly the water and Epsom salts will rehydrate him, encourage him to drink, and soften up that impaction. This mineral oil will hopefully lubricate him up a bit in order to help the passing of that impaction,” the vet told Vivian as she measured out the amount of oil she was going to give Riki. Vivian felt her phone vibrate in the pocket of her hoodie. Fishing it out with her right hand, she read the caller ID: Desmond Cafferty. She hesitated, her finger hovering over the red button to decline the call. It had been over a month since she spoke to Des last. Last she had heard, he was back in Scotland and not in the horse industry anymore. There had been a desire on both ends to maintain contact, but the reality was much different. Work, timing, and some misunderstanding resulted in a lack of communication that had become fairly permanent. Vivian wanted to speak to Desmond, but as Riki launched his head up into the air in pain with another flehmen response, she jammed her finger onto the ‘decline’ button and refocused herself on the suffering stallion.
The vet added the mineral oil to Riki’s stomach and then removed the long tubing from his throat. She stood back and looked at Riki whose head had dropped. His ears hung emotionlessly from his head, and his eyes were dull. The vet rubbed Riki’s forehead and looked up at Vivian whose face was still very grave.
“How long do you wait before you determine whether or not to use IVs?” Vivian asked.
“I normally do them right after tubing, just to make sure the body has steady access to fluid,” the vet answered with a heavy sigh. “Do you want an IV on him tonight?” Vivian looked down at Riki and nodded silently, afraid to open her mouth for fear of her voice breaking. Vivian looked away from the vet, not wanting her to see the heavy tear roll down her cheek and drip off of her chin onto the floor of the stable.
